Kat Travels the Globe...

By Kat

In my profession other than dance I have had the opportunity to travel all over the US, Europe and now Asia. So, in my travels I have decided to give a little bit of input to the good belly dance things I discover along the way. I usually travel with about 7 (all men!) so sometimes it is difficult to get them to be my testers as far as different cultures and foods, but I have found a couple that are willing to be subjected to good food and beautiful belly dance! They assist me with opinions on food; whether they enjoyed the restaurant; and with comments on the dancer; so it is not just my opinion I am providing, but a collaborative effort. I am only going to include the places I recommend…the others that I have been to that are not on this list will manifest their own destiny and will not need my help!

Food:

• Atlanta, GA.

• San Francisco, CA.

• Washington, D.C.

Shopping:

• San Diego, CA

Classes:

• San Francisco, CA.

• Scottsdale AZ.

Imperial Fez
Atlanta

The food was very good and the service was great, but you have to be with a group that is willing to take off their shoes at the door, share off the same plate, and sit on the floor. Those things were actually an issue with some of my group of corporate executives! I of course have no problem with either of those things but it is a consideration that should be discussed with guests

This restaurant was a Moroccan restaurant and had a dancer that was very good technically as well as a very beautiful woman. She did a wonderful dance with candles and great floor work. Her one draw back was that she was not what I would call a welcoming, friendly dancer in that while she was working for tips she was not very personable. As part of her show she asked people to dance with her. That being said, she was very uncomfortable with her audience and certainly did not want the women she chose to know how to dance. However, she did dance for my colleagues at our table and they enjoyed that. She missed a good tip from me but secured a couple of dollars from the staff.

I will go back because I know they change the dancers, and I will make sure I go with people that know the above listed elements of the restaurant.

Pasha Restaurant
San Francisco

This has to be my favorite place to go during my travels for food and belly dance, so far. This place was great! They have live music performed by artist, Jalaleddin, who is also the owner of the restaurant. His music on the kanun is out of this belly dancer world! He is also one of the most personable people you will meet! The dancer that I saw was beautiful, talented and great with the audience and her musicians! The welcome feeling in this restaurant was bar none the best I have had thus far. The food and service were impeccable and very attentive. The atmosphere of the restaurant transcends you to a tent in the desert, complete with carpets and lush colors; but has benched seating, which was important to my guests!

They have a fez party in which they give at least one if not to all people in a group a fez; and have a belly dance lesson in the middle of the performance. This was so much fun! My staff that went that night are now official Pasaha certified belly dancers, and we are all looking forward to going back! I will hit this restaurant every time I go to San Francisco!

Marrakesh Restaurant
Washington, D.C.

The food was good but the service was not great. We did have a great dancer that night, which not only got the audience’s attention by her dancing and beauty, but also was definitely a strong performer. She was able to dance with everyone and incorporate families into her performance very well. She was what made the restaurant for me. We had a group of five that night and it is a traditional Moroccan seven-course meal, which takes time, but there was only our large group and four other tables with smaller numbers of people and the service was very slow and inattentive.

They had a great dancer and that is my focal point when I go! My group enjoyed the food immensely and the dancer as well. We will go back.

Byzantium of Old Town
San Diego

So far I have hit one real gem in shopping for great jewelry and beads, and that is in San Diego. It has unique items especially in ethnic and tribal styles and good prices. Christmas gifts have the approval of the Farfesha troupe!

Jasmina
Scottsdale

I went to Scottsdale and met a teacher who taught in a great way in that she incorporated her lesson at a restaurant and then lunch! I had individual attention and great…great…great…food. I would have loved to see her perform at that restaurant, but I was not able to. She is Jasmina in Scottsdale, AZ who I have not been able to find again, but she did deserve honorable mention! I believe the restaurant was Shahrzad Mediterranean Grill, as there are not very many in Scottsdale!
