Emad Sayyah's "Best Songs"

Review By Michelle

Emad Sayyah’s collection is a great CD for parties with its lively, upbeat songs. All sixteen songs are easily danceable—and when I usually consider myself lucky to get one or two good songs off of an album, this is a bonus!

The first third of the album is very synthesized and sounds almost like a Disney score, but don’t take that as a criticism. Songs such as Tiky Tiky Boom (which refers to the pounding of a heart in love) and Tirilalli (A Strange Way of Thinking) are just plain fun. For a dancer, these songs will provide crowd pleasing performances.

By track five, however, the songs become a little richer with a more classical sound, even some traditional sounding pieces with an oriental kick. They are not as bouncy as the first tracks, but a definitely very danceable. The energy level peaks in “Leh Leh Leh.”
“I am burning for you and my heart is confused….I am burning for you both day and night….Why, oh why? Why, my soul, won’t you say yes?”

The longest song on the album is under five minutes, great for newer dancers and good for all dancers considering the energy level each song requires. Another plus is the translations of the song lyrics. I often worry when I choose a song exactly what I’m dancing to if the album cover is all in Arabic—I don’t want to evoke an emotion in my dance which is contrary to the song’s lyrics. The translations as well as the one-line notes on the feeling of the dance help immensely.

This compilation is the first of Emad Sayyah’s I’ve listened to, but from what I’ve heard, I would be inclined to purchase more.
